just overly conservative???

"Art: 1 the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power" -- New Oxford American Dictionary

yesterday we had a day off (in Warsaw) and the three of us (my team) went to visit one of Warsaw's Contemporary Art Galleries. I was pretty excited to go to an art gallery as it's been years since i've visited one and in general, i do enjoy art very much. but i forgot how much stuff there also is out there in modern art that i really really don't like. there were things that i really enjoyed and i appreciate the many creative venues and avenues many modern artists have taken. but there's so much out there that sickens me. i really can't stomach some of the stuff there is out there. "art" put out mainly just for shock value. art that supposedly is an expression of freedom but really isn't so free -- just a reflection of how sick this world is sometimes. it seems like so much contemporary art revolves around sexually explicit themes -- usually very twisted sexual themes and pictures. and the awful thing is that once these shocking pictures go in, they stay with you.

being a person who's always been very sensitive spiritually, i also take in so much of art's spiritual aura. for most true artists, what they create is an expression of their soul. and so much of it is so dark and twisted these days.

maybe i'm just overly conservative. my teammate (an artist) points out (with validity) that art isn't always supposed to be something beautiful. and to some extent i do agree. i think it's more of a statement or an expression of one's self or one's views on some aspect of life. but i think in it's original essence, it was meant to be. we were created in God's image and He is the most masterful Creator, the most gifted Artist. One could call Him the original artist. and He is the epitome of Beauty and Imagination, is He not?
